List of counties in California: The state of California is divided into 58 counties. The region was first divided into twenty-seven counties on February 18, 1850. These were further sub-divided to form sixteen additional counties by 1860.

California is home to San Bernardino County, the largest county in the contiguous United States, as well as Los Angeles County, the most populous county in the United States.

In 1900, the Los Angeles Times defined southern California as including “the seven counties of Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Orange, Riverside, San Diego, Ventura and Santa Barbara.” In 1999, the Times added a newer county—Imperial—to that list.

The county seat is the city of Los Angeles. It also includes two offshore islands, San Clemente and Santa Catalina. Los Angeles County has 88 incorporated cities and many unincorporated areas. At 4,083 square miles (10,570 km2), it is larger than the combined areas of the states of Rhode Island and Delaware.

With an area of 20,105 square miles, San Bernardino County is the largest county in the United States by area, although some of Alaska’s boroughs and census areas are larger.

Alpine County, officially the County of Alpine, is a county located in the U.S. state of California. As of the 2010 census, the population was 1,175. making it the least populous county in California. The county seat is the Census Designated Place of Markleeville.

A tourist magnet known for its sunny climate, beautiful beaches, and entertainment industry, Los Angeles in recent decades has experienced the downside of urban expansion, with its well-publicized air pollution, traffic congestion, and racial and ethnic tensions.

An oft repeated myth is that Los Angeles is located in the desert. Not true I’m afraid. Las Vegas is built in a desert, as are eastern California cities such as Lancaster or Barstow, but Los Angeles was and is no desert in the strict sense of the word.

Introduction to the High Desert in Southern California by High Desert Opportunity. The region includes cities of Adelanto, Apple Valley, Barstow, Hesperia, and Victorville as well as San Bernardino CountyVideo production by Blue Silver Video Productions.

On September 4, 1781, a group of forty-four settlers known as “Los Pobladores” founded the pueblo called “El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles del Río de Porciúncula“; in English it is “The Town of Our Lady the Queen of Angels of the Porciúncula River”.

Los Angeles, California is the second largest city in population, after New York City. Los Angeles has several nicknames. One is simply the city’s initials, L.A. It is also called the City of Angels because Los Angeles means “the angels” in Spanish.

The Low Desert: the Colorado Desert near Palm Springs, California. The Low Desert is a common name for one the Deserts of California regional areas, that includes the Colorado Desert and Yuha Desert in the Southern California portion of the Sonoran Desert.

The land north of Palm Springs marks the start of the Mojave Desert – a vast sandy plain with only occasional habitation, although the immediate north east is more hilly, and here the Little San Bernardino Mountains rise to 5,000 feet and are covered with the many curious plants of Joshua Tree National Park.

The city is sometimes called Tinseltown. This nickname comes from the shiny, bright and often unreal nature of Hollywood and the movie industry. Another nickname for Los Angeles is La-La Land, using the first letters of Los and Angeles.

The name Los Angeles comes from the Spanish language and it means “The Angels”. The name is an abbreviation from the original name of the place. The original name is “El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles de Porciúncula” (in English, “town of our lady the Queen of Angels of the little Portion”).
